Character Mood Playlist: Angry Vibes.

Someone isn’t very happy. Well, I guess that means it’s time for the ANGRY VIBES playlist.

Some character’s lose their cool a lot faster than others, so I’ll be selecting songs that reflect the few moments of rage each of them have.

Enjoy!

#1: Let You Down

#2: O My Heart

#3: Ghost of Love

#4: Broken inside

#5: Coming Undone

Character Mood Playlist: Romantic Vibes

Welcome to the Romantic Vibes playlist. I’m going to try and limit this to only a handful of songs. 5 max. I’ve been trying to think of what songs I wanted to put on this one but I keep finding new ones!

I’m also going to attempt to pick 1 per artist. Sometimes I feel like entire albums suit a particular character haha…but this is a more general playlist for the series as a whole and needs to reflect more than one of my OCs.

#1: Art Class by Beabadoobee

#2: Moon and Back by Alice Kristiansen

#3: I Will Spend My Whole Life Loving You by Kina Grannis ft. Imaginary Future

#4: Let Me Love You Like A Woman by Lana Del Rey

#5: Worry by Mother Mother

That’s about all the lovey dovey stuff I can handle today haha.

Character Mood Playlist: Sad Vibes

For today, there are going to be two blog prompts. The first one is a Character Mood Playlist and the second is Thanksgiving themed.

This mood playlist is a “Sad Vibes” playlist. The goal is for me to go through my character’s playlists and find the sad songs on that list that suit them.

This first song is off Darius’ playlist.

#1: Try to Change

Some of these songs you will definitely recognize from some of my Instagram reels and stories featuring my character’s.

#2: Noboby’s Home

This next song is off Charlotte’s list. Charlotte is an original member of the core four. Haha…makes them sound like superheroes. Anyway, I won’t spoil anything more than that.

#3: Take It All Away

This song is on Nicholas’ playlist (the small bean with the pointy teeth). I think it’s actually the saddest song on there. Nicholas is probably one of my favourites to draw. I like drawing his socks. I haven’t done that yet, but he has some really fun socks….

Moving on!

#4: Lonesome Town

This song is off Roland’s playlist. It’s pretty. I tried to learn it on guitar. I’m not the best guitarist though but maybe I’ll record it sometime haha. I can picture Roland singing this to himself at home.

#5: Man on The Mountaintop

This song is from Dianna’s playlist. It’s more upbeat than the previous but still sad nevertheless. I’ve been drawing to it for maybe 11 years now? Which seems extremely weird…but I remember drawing character’s from a book I was writing when I was 13 to this song. Wow time sure flies.

#6: Scenery

For this song I’ll be sharing two versions. The original and a translated cover I did a while back, which Ashmute liked. I still can’t believe they came across my cover haha. Anyway, the song is on Rose’s playlist and is absolutely beautiful.

I wish the sound quality on mine was better but I did it 2 years ago before I had a booth built in my basement…so it’s bedroom quality haha.

Roland’s mother’s character playlist probably has the majority of sad songs. I don’t know why or how this happened but it did. Anyway, his mother went through a recent name change so to keep things simple I’ll call her Roland’s Mom. Our next song is from her playlist.

#7: Secret Door

I absolutely adore Amy Lee’s vocals. This song is so beautiful. On Roland’s Mom’s playlist the song is listed as a song that represents the saddest moment in her life. So yah…there’s that. Scene’s with his mom are probably the hardest for me to write. She makes me cry…no wonder her playlist is so sad.

The next song (if you’ve been watching my reels) you’ve probably heard already.

#8: Baby Boy

This song is shared between Vincent, Roland, Roland’s older brother Lawrence’s playlists. I believe I used it on a reel or story involving a drawing I was doing with Roland. I usually listen to it while I draw him.

#9: Otherside

This song is on Kurtis’ playlist. I enjoy a lot of the songs on his list. It has songs like this and then stuff like My Sharona. Which is weird because Kurtis tends to be very serious.

#10: Forgotten

I’m trying hard to avoid having the same artists on this list but Eloise doesn’t have a lot of sad songs on her list. I’d say this song is more angry than sad…which I think might be a prompt! Oh well.

The next song belongs to her son’s playlist.

#11: My Smile Is Extinct

I love how upbeat this song is despite the lyrics. I honestly feel bad for Thompson sometimes. I really do. Although I occasionally sympathize with all my character’s in some way…even the horrible ones.

#12: I Don’t Care

This song comes from Micah’s playlist. I drew him the other day with his sister and brother. His playlist isn’t very cheery either.

The next song is another repeat artist…apologies.

#13: Words

This song is on Zana’s playlist. It’s the same vibe as Micah’s and directed at the same person…however they have different songs for the same incident in their lives because each matches the character’s voices. Micah tends to be more expressive and upfront about his emotions. Zana on the other hand keeps a lot things to herself.

Now, Peter doesn’t have any sad songs on his list at all. I’m baffled by this. Actually no I’m not. He’s a pretty happy guy most of the time (as long as he’s not stressed out). So…I guess to put a break in this sad fest, I’ll share his cheer up song.

#14: Old Friends

I wanted to use this song in my reel the other day of Peter and Roland…because it describes their friendship perfectly. It may not seem like it but…Roland is Francis. Gosh those two make me laugh sometimes.

#15: White Sparrows

This song is on Lawrence’s playlist. T’is a sorrowful ditty. A mournful tune. It’s…well yah. It’s sad.

#16: Under A Black Sky

This is from Wendy’s playlist (she’s Rose’s mother and Lawrence’s wife). I absolutely adored this song when the album came out and whenever I’d listen to it, I thought of her. I guess because of the contrast between the chorus and versus along with the lyrics.

#17: Confessions Of A Broken Heart

I think it’s kind of fun that I did these playlists for nearly all of my character’s in this series. Both the major and minor. This one is for Wendy’s aunt. I’ve always loved this song. It gives me chills.

#18: You Are My Sunshine

This song is from Caspian’s playlist. He’s in the pumpkin picture. It’s not exactly a sad song but it is…that is if you actually listen to all the words. This cover captures the feelings of it. The song is a favourite of my grandparents. They used to sing it when washing the dishes every night. Which was really sweet…

This version song kinda ruins that vibe for me but it definitely captures Caspian.

#19: Lifeboat

This song is on sweet little Julius’ playlist. It makes me a little sad that it’s on his but being little is tough sometimes. Don’t worry the rest of his list is happy. I swear!

#20: Hurts Like Hell

This song is from Theodore’s playlist. I haven’t drawn him yet…or ever actually, which is super weird! I like him though, he’s a good guy.

He’s Micah and Zana’s father.

The next set of songs are bonus songs from my MC’s playlist because these character’s have more than one. I’m skipping a handful of character’s because they don’t appear in book 1 and their songs are kind of spoilers.

Roland has a few on his list so I’ll pick 3 from his, Dianna’s and try to get 3 of Nicholas’. These songs are also from different periods in these character’s lives. For Roland and Dianna these are more of their teen years playlists.

Roland:

#1: I Am In Great Pain, Please Help Me

#2: The Grey

#3: Disappear

Nicholas:

#1: Little Pistol

This song is listed as a song representing Nicholas’ childhood. I think it might be one of the saddest he has, although there are a handful of them.

#2: Ein Liebeslied

#3: Hate Me

Nicholas and Roland both have this song on their lists under different categories.

Dianna:

#1: A Soulmate Who Wasn’t Meant to Be

#2: Break My Broken Heart

#3: Run

Well, I hope this list of song didn’t make you cry and instead introduced you to a new favourite song haha!

I believe I have another prompt for music. Yes the next music related one is Romantic Vibes. Yikes…that’s gonna be hard. I’ll try not to do any repeats. I notice that a lot of sad songs are also romantic.

I think I’ll do one final bonus song. I’ll pick from Roland’s list I think.

What’s your favourite song?

If you’re a writer, which song fits your character’s current mood?

Chill Vibes Playlist: OC Edition

Today’s task is to create a chill vibes playlist inspired by the characters in my novel. I’ve decided to pick 1 song per my main cast of characters. I’ll also do little introductory posts for each of them as well. I hope I pick songs that they’d enjoy haha!

Song #1: Dance With Me

This first song is for Dianna. I can picture her dancing and singing to it secretly when no one else is around haha.

Song #2: Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop

This song is really sweet. I have it on a playlist for either Lawrence or Wendy. It reminds me of how they met. Backstory stuff…but it really captures them well.

Song# 3: 4/4

This song makes me think of Roland. It just seems like something he’d start singing to himself while brushing his teeth or something.

Song #4: My Best Friend

This song reminds me of Nicholas. I already have it on one or two of his playlists.

Song#5: I Love My Boyfriend

This song is for Rose haha. If you watched my drawing reel on Instagram, you’ll hear another song by Princess Chelsea from the picture of Rose with her brother’s picking pumpkin.

Song# 6: Try to Change

This song is for Darius. He’s surprisingly got a lot of really chill songs on his playlist. I was shocked. I expected more chill vibes from some of my other character’s.

Song #7: Telling Lies

This songs on Kurtis’ playlist. It’s not exactly chill…but it’s not exactly not chill? I think this is the most chill Kurtis is gonna get haha.

I’ve been struggling to find a good song for Peter. His playlist has no chill. All party songs. If you’re having a party in the future, hit him up.

Song #8: Beautiful People Beautiful Problems

This song is on Eloise’s playlist.

I’m starting to realize that a lot of my character’s have no chill. They need to get whelmed and feel the aster (if you get that reference, you’re now one of my favourite people!).

What song’s do you like to listen to when you’re just hanging out?

New Music!

My new cover is up on YouTube and is also available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and more!

I had a lot of fun singing and playing this song. It was a song I used to sing all the time as a little girl. It really resonated with me back then. I’d love to cover more songs that remind me of my awkward preteen-teenage years haha.

What was your favourite song as a kid?

Raising the Stakes

I’ve been working on a lot of other projects, so my editing had to take a backseat for almost all of August while I adjusted to my new schedule.

However, during my break period I’ve been playing around with a particular scene in my head, trying to see what I could do with it to really raise the stakes.

This may sound a bit silly to a handful of you reading this but my burst of inspiration came while watching cartoons. I kept thinking to myself while watching Miraculous Ladybug and Young Justice (I’m a sucker for superheros), how excellent the writing of the shows were. Especially in the case with Miraculous.

I’m on the edge of my seat (as an adult viewer), wondering what’s going to happen next. Im scared for them. Will they lose their miraculous this time? Will Hawkmoth finally win? Will they find out each others secret identities?

This is what I want to create for my readers someday. I want them to think “I need to know what happens next!” That anticipation and excitement is what makes stories so fun.

So, in regards to this particular scene it finally hit me that, in order to make sure that I actually accomplish this, I need to instill that same emotion in both myself and my characters.

Honestly, I don’t know what it is about this one scene that has made it so difficult these past few months, but I’m ready to tackle it.

Of course, I’m also being mindful of my other obligations (recordings, auditions, part-time job etc). Sometimes I wonder if I should get a t-shirt that lists what it is I do. I have a hard time explaining it to people.

I know I also promised to record this last edit, and I will…but I have misplaced my tripod at the moment so fingers crossed I can find it.

This is the final song on my character D’s playlist. I honestly love this song so much, I taught myself how to play it on guitar. It also ends up on my Instagram stories…often. It’s just pretty. I think I instantly fall for songs that remind me of my character’s or certain scenes. This song makes me think about D and R’s relationship both past and present.

Maybe I’ll post a cover of this on my YouTube channel later this month. When I have time to record it haha. I’ve got about 4 things to record tomorrow morning before I go to work. Still adjusting to this new schedule but I am glad to be working again after such a long time.

I’m also aware that I haven’t done an official AuthorTube video yet. I tried recording it twice now haha. I just didn’t like how it turned out, so I’m going to try again sometime in the near future as well. I think I’ll feel better about it once I finish this round of edits and pass them on to my editor.

Love, Hate, Loss and Regret: Exploring My MC’s Love, Apology and Anger Languages

Today on Twitter @RosalynBriar asked “What’s your MC’s love language?”

It wasn’t something I had ever considered, so I decided to take the quiz on behalf on my characters.

I decided to start with R. After taking the quiz (on his behalf), I learned that his Love Language is Acts of Service, which surprised me. I thought it would have been something like Words of Affirmation or Quality Time, but he got Acts of Service.

For each of the questions, I answered them based off events either in the novel or that were apart of his backstory.

The reason why Acts of Service is so important to him is because he feels overwhelmed with how busy he gets. When he was younger he was a little more spontaneous and even as an adult makes decisions without thinking of the consequences of his actions. He often thinks first about how something might effect himself, and is still realizing that what he does also has an effect on the people he loves.

His childhood was full of routine. His father was very strict when it came to keeping things orderly, and his parents and older brother often had busy schedules. When he was a teenager, R found this extremely frustrating and also longed for attention from his loved ones. This longing for acceptance and acknowledgement is why I thought for sure his would be Words of Affirmation or Quality Time.

Despite his past, R throughout the novel and also throughout his life, appreciates the things that others go out of their way to do for him. Like his best friend sitting out on a game of tag because R isn’t allowed to play, or when his nanny would make him his favourite dessert after finding out he’s had a rough day. As an adult it is his friends helping him with his work, despite knowing the consequences of it, and also looking out for him in little ways, that although he may not say or show it often, he appreciates more than anything.

After R I decided to take the quiz again, on behalf of his ex-fiancée D.

I assumed her Love Language would be Receiving Gifts but was surprised to learn that it was Quality Time. She often gives gifts to others so I suppose receiving them isn’t as important to her as giving them.

After taking the quiz for D, I realized that she highly values the time she spends with those she loves. She loves to meet new people, and is a genuinely caring person, so much in fact that she often tries to guard herself physically by avoiding or isolating herself from those she doesn’t want to hurt or disappoint.

Even when she was younger, her happiest memories are the ones where she is spending time with her family and friends. It didn’t matter what they were doing, she just loved being with them. The more time she spent with someone the more she enjoyed their company.

Since she tends to avoid people and run from difficult/uncomfortable situations, it never once occurred to me that she might actually be someone who values Quality Time above everything else. It’s actually quite sad that she would rather stay away from someone she loves versus hurt them. It shows that she’s willing to hurt herself in order to protect the feelings of someone else even if that person doesn’t deserve it.

Anger Language

I wanted to continue finding out more about these two and how their personalities contribute to the decisions they make, so I decided to also do the Anger Quiz on their behalf.

I didn’t know there was an Anger Quiz until today, so this will definitely be interesting. Before I do the quiz, I thought I’d look up what the Anger Language’s were.

At first glance I’m not sure where R would be placed, however D I feel is probably a mixture Passive and Assertive. A bit of a weird mix…but there are instances that off the top of my head, would make me place her in one of these categories. I find R is a little more difficult to pin down when it comes to how he expresses his anger, so I’ll see what happens when I take the quiz.

So the quiz showed that R was yellow? I don’t know what that means so I think I might have to try a different quiz. It said he handles his anger well, but there are times when his anger handles him. So I suppose he falls in the middle somewhere.

Alright so in the other quiz he got 57%. So I suppose his anger levels are moderate. There are times when he handles it well, and times when he doesn’t. I suppose that makes sense given that I had no idea of where to place him.

Now for D. I’ll see what score she gets. I feel like neither of these quizzes are helpful but thinking of how my characters would answer is interesting.

D got 43% on the quiz. I’ll see which colour she calls under on the other. I’m going to assume this means that either she handles her anger well or that she avoids conflict.

She also got yellow.

I really don’t know what any of this means?

Regardless I’d still like to try and do the other quiz, which is the Apology Language one. I’m curious to see the results.

Apology Language

You ever notice how often Joe apologizes?

Sorry, off topic.

Unlike the Anger Language, I am somewhat familiar with Apology Languages.

Everyone handles apologies differently, and as we learn from the time we start school, sometimes saying “I’m sorry” isn’t as strong as showing the person we’ve hurt that we’ve changed.

Now based off of R and D’s Love Languages, I’m going to automatically speculate that R prefers to see action versus just hearing “I’m sorry” from someone and D I believe might want the person who hurt her to take responsibility for their actions.

I’m going to do R first, as I did with the other two quizzes.

R’s Apology Language was Make Restitution.

This quiz was a little harder than the Love Languages one, however this answer does make sense in regards to his character. R has been wronged in the past and a simple, “I’m sorry” doesn’t cut it for him. He’s still anger about a lot of the things that happened, and his best friend knows that when he does him wrong, the best thing he can do is make it up to him versus give a quick little apology.

R wants others to admit when they’ve done him wrong, and there are instances in this first book, where he both apologies and makes an effort to do right on behalf of those he’s wronged.

He was wronged so much as a child that he struggles to accept words as an apology versus action. It is more meaningful to him when a friend or family member shows him that they are sorry, versus just telling him they are.

Now it’s D’s turn. I really believe she’s going to be Accepting Responsibility, but we’ll see.

D’s Apology Language is actually…Request Forgiveness!

I didn’t expect that at all but it does make sense. She doesn’t like being in conflict with people and I think because of that she is more likely to try to resolve an issue with someone who asks for forgiveness, versus holding a grudge.

Thinking about it now, there are moments throughout her life and in the novel where she requests forgiveness from her friends and family.

She also wishes R would forgive her for what happened in the past, but is fully aware that he isn’t obligated to do so. She often doesn’t think she deserves forgiveness and this is something he has in common with her.

Neither of them believe they deserve to be forgiven by the other.

Despite R recognizing what he did wrong in their relationship, he feels that what D did outweighs that, and therefore he won’t ask for her forgiveness. He’s still angry.

D on the other hand, feels that he has every right to be angry with her and knows he won’t simply accept an apology. However, she chooses not to tiptoe around him because she knows that his stubbornness and unwillingness to forgive others often clouds his judgement. She’s very quick to tell him when he is in the wrong and has never been shy about doing so in the past. It is something that he used to appreciate, but now finds slightly irritating.

This was definitely a fun way to take a break from editing.

To finish off this post, I thought I’d share songs related to each of these characters Languages, from their Character Playlists.

R’s Love & LOSS Songs

  1. My Smile is Extinct by Kane Strang

2. Bloodshot by Dove Cameron

3. Durch Den Monsun/Monsoon by Tokio Hotel

4. Break My Heart Again by Finneas

5. Asshole Father by Sick Puppies (Explicit Lyrics)

D’s Love & REGRET Songs

  1. Man on The Mountaintop by Skylar Grey/Holly Brook

2. Papercut by Oohyo

3. The Chain by Fleetwood Mac

4. I Dare You by The Regrettes

5. Break My Broken Heart

A song that I think would describe the two of them after their break up is on D’s character playlist

“I’m on the outside looking through
You’re throwing rocks around your room
And while you’re bleeding on your back in the glass
I’ll be glad that I made it out
And sorry that it all went down like it did”

Phoebe Bridgers, Motion Sickness

Book Talk Episode 15: Editing Update and Character Playlists

In today’s blog post, I’m going to be sharing a song from one of my main character’s playlists. I Go Hungry, by Mother Mother is his “morning routine” song. This song really captures his teenage years.

In a strange way, my characters introduced me to this band and many others that I am now in love with. I love making playlists for my characters, some of them even have more than one.

I was reading through my editors comments and squealing because her suggestions are fantastic. I loved this one thing that she added in, where she had one of my characters do the simplest action…it was a three word difference and it made the entire scene perfect! Exactly as I’d imagined.

Actually rereading the scene had me blushing, because it was adorable. It was one of those rare moments where my characters are seen together, just enjoying each others company. They weren’t worried about all the things going on in their lives…they were just having fun.

So far, I’m liking this deep dive editing process. It’s a lot of work. I’ve made colour coded notes for myself so I can keep track of everything. Even so, I like seeing my editors thoughts on each scene, and getting her insight on different aspects of the story. She picks up on things I missed in my earlier edits and I am very grateful for it.

Well, I’d better get back to editing. I think I’ll share another song off one of my character’s playlists.

On her playlist, Poison by Sick Puppies is her “outlook on life” song.
